Bio

I'm Ying Gao, a student in the class of 2014 at Newton North High School in Newton, Massachusetts. I enjoy math and earth science, as well as reading, drawing, and soccer. I spend a lot of my time working with my math and science teams on projects and competitions, and currently in my spare time I'm working hard on a math research project. I'm interested in subjects running the gamut from combinatorics to economics to environmental engineering to oceanography.

Project: Mass Spectrometer (Sector-Type Analyzer)

This is a model of a mass spectrometer with a sector-type analyzer. After undergoing chemical ionization, particles from molecules are accelerated through an electric potential and enter a magnetic field, which bends them with some radius of curvature that can be detected based on where the particles land. In this particular case, (m/z) is proportional to R^2. You may choose to vary the electric and magnetic field strengths and watch the trajectory of an arbitrary particle through them, or to show the behaviors and mass spectra of various preset molecules in this type of mass spectrometer.
