Bio

Will Sun is a rising senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ). From a young age, he was fascinated by math, mesmerized by the beautiful diagrams of geometry and the compelling enigmas of number theory. He took this love to become an avid math competitor, qualifying for the United States of American Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USA(J)MO) and ranking first in the Math Kangaroo competition for three consecutive years. As a ninth grader, he earned first place internationally in Math Kangaroo and was awarded the top honor of an all-fees-paid international math camp in Poland. He is an active member of his school's varsity math team, representing his school at national and international math competitions such as the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament (HMMT), the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) and the Princeton University Math Competition (PUMaC ). In tenth grade, he realized he could apply his passion for math to achieve a better understanding of the physical world, so he began his pursuit of physics. Since then, he has qualified for USAPhO and has become treasurer of the TJ physics team, a position he will use to convey his love of physics with all members of the team. Will loves to share his passions with others as well. On weekends, he volunteers to teach MATHCOUNTS to elementary and middle-school students in his community. He has taken the most rigorous courses offered at his school, including complex analysis, differential equations, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, AP Calculus BC, quantum mechanics, AP Physics C, parallel programming, artificial intelligence and AP Computer Science. Further, Will utilizes his technical skills to explore his curiosities. He has ample technical experience in Mathematica, Python, C, Java, PHP, HTML, MySQL and LaTeX. In his free time, Will runs on the track team, throws for the ultimate Frisbee team, competes in chess tournaments and solves Rubik’s cubes.
