Jorge Plazas Vargas

Class of 2026

Jorge is a mathematical physicist currently working at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid. His main area of research is noncommutative geometry, where spaces are understood in terms of operator algebras within a spectral framework in which the discrete and the continuum naturally coexist. After finishing his PhD at the Max Planck Institute in Bonn, Jorge was a postdoc at IHES and then at Utrecht University, and he later worked as a researcher at Universidad de Granada and at Concordia University. Before joining Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, Jorge was a professor at Universidad Javeriana in Bogota. Jorge enjoys hiking and is particularly fond of the Pyrenees and the Andean ranges of Colombia.
