Project: Analysis of Mathematics Genealogy

Goal of the project:

The goal of this project was to gain a better understanding of how the mathematical community behaves throughout time by analyzing the Math Genealogy Project database.

Summary of work:

  1. We did data mining from the Math Genealogy website.
  2. We explored various ways to visualize and interpret the information.
  3. We measured how the community developed by observing a mathematician who has an advisor from a different country.

Results and future work:

  1. We found out our data is heavily biased toward Americans.
  2. We made a histogram and distribution map of the number of new mathematicians in each country for that year and an ancestor tree.
  3. We located a certain point in history where there is a sudden increase of mathematicians.
  4. We found that 20% of mathematicians in our data have an adviser from a different country.
