Jesse is currently an undergrad at the University of Washington and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in physics. He has been developing his love for education over the past couple of years as he works part time in a Seattle Public School system high school. He sees (as he's sure many others who attend this program also see) many ways in which the potential of math and science education can be unlocked to make these subjects more accessible to all students.
Project: Explorations in the Physics of Sound
Goal of the project:
To utilize the sound feature in Mathematica to aid in the understanding of concepts, as well as use Mathematica's audio functions to apply computational knowledge to sound analysis.
Summary of work:
Two large pieces of the project were creating a sonification of the Doppler effect and walking through how to import an audio file and performing a Fourier analysis on it to either recreate the sound or gain knowledge of the signal.
Results and future work:
Both of those tasks proved quite difficult, and I wasn't able to perfect either one. For the Doppler effect, all that is left is to synch up the playing of the noise to the movement of a car. For the Fourier analysis, I still have to determine if having students do their own is possible/feasible. I also need to develop a lesson plan.
