Jie Frye studied mathematics at the University of Central Florida, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2012. She finished her master's degree in mathematics at the University of Florida in 2013. She is teaching mathematics at Bunker Hill Community College in Boston, Massachusetts. Her main interests are culturally relevant pedagogy, collective learning and computational thinking.
Project: Contextualized Computing in Teaching Statistics
Goal of the project:
Create lesson plans that integrate computational thinking into the classroom content, teaching practice and learning.
Summary of work:
Students in introductory statistics courses learn to describe data, distributions, regression, probability, statistical inference, confidence intervals and hypothesis tests with applications in the real world. Occasionally, hand calculation and table reading hinder students from engaging in the purposeful use of mathematics. In this project, lecture notes are created using the Wolfram Language so that students can visualize and enjoy statistics by becoming immersed in the context.
