Valentina got her bachelor's and master's degrees in applied mathematics at "La Sapienza" University of Rome, her hometown. During her studies, her interests revolved around numerical analysis and approximation theory. In her master's thesis, she dealt with an approximation model relevant for numerical computations. This model approximates smooth functions and provides cubature formulas for multidimensional operators appearing in mathematical physics (this method is known as approximate approximations).
After the completion of her degree, in the last five years, she has been working as a software developer at AlmavivA, an Italian IT company. More specifically, her work focuses on object-oriented programming. She is responsible for the full life cycle development of software products, from the gathering of initial requirements to design, coding, testing, and implementation.
The goal of this project is the realization of an automatic layout procedure. It aims at an optimized management of images and text flows, possibly of different size and length, using several criteria, such as weight, blank spaces, and text rearrangement. Ideally, it would provide an optimized algorithm for the creation of perceptual maps and word clouds, for example.
The first approach will be based on the modification of functions and procedures already present in the documentation, such as ImageCollage, GraphicsGrid, and Multicolumn. The algorithm will then be developed following basic criteria, such as division in multicolumn and introduction of page breaks, variable sizes and preservation of aspect ratio, elimination of blank spaces, and introduction of a partial ordering via weights.
